Stakes high as rivals await fate of Globalive

With time to spare, Globalive Wireless Management Corp.’s 400 or so newly trained call-centre employees were deployed last week to help charitable organizations in Calgary and Toronto as they await a ruling expected in the next few days on whether their company will be allowed to remain in business.

The issue The nation’s regulator, the CRTC, has ruled Globalive Wireless Management Corp. is controlled by foreigners and therefore ineligible to enter Canada’s $16-billion cellphone industry. The ruling follows an approval of Globalive’s ownership structure by Industry Canada. Tony Clement, the Industry Minister, is expected to decide on the matter this week.

Anu Singer manages WIND Mobile’s call centre in Mississauga. It has about 100 employees. They finished weeks of training on Friday – the 13th – and haven’t answered a call since. It might have been a bad omen but for the CRTC, which pre-empted any possible bad luck from on high by dishing out some of its own, ensuring there are no customers to require any sort of service.

A couple of days ago Chris Robbins, CCO (Chief Customer Officer) of WIND stated on their company blog that they will be hitting the streets and doing “Random Acts of Kindness”. I guess that day was yesterday as a bunch of pics have surfaced of some of the staff that has been hired.
