    Chris Tsiavalias completed the computer networking program at St. Clair College and was taking courses in law enforcement when he applied for a job in Globalive Communication Corp.’s Windsor call centre.

    His expectations weren’t high.

    Fifteen months later, Tsiavalias has gotten used to the surprised looks he gets when he tells folks he loves his job.

    OTTAWA — The Harper government is committed to preserving Canadian content on television and radio while allowing for a greater foreign presence in the telecommunications sector, Industry Minister Tony Clement says.

    The minister told a House committee Thursday it is possible to separate the two.

    “I’m not saying it’s easy, but it certainly isn’t impossible,” he said.

  • Industry Minister Tony Clement has firmly defended the government’s decision to declare Globalive Wireless Management Corp. a Canadian controlled company, an order that set off a controversy over the status of the country’s telecom foreign investment law.

    The facts before the cabinet were “quite clear,” Clement told the Commons Industry, Science and Technology committee on Thursday. But “reasonable minds could differ.”

  • The other day I took had the opportunity to go deep behind the scene of Wind Mobile’s network
    – basically the guts of their operations. As you’ll see in the video I catch up with Ante Rupcic, he’s the VP of Core Network and he’s one of those guys who has years of experience and loves what he does. We talk about about what and how long it takes to build an all IP network, why the room is so cold and loud, what happens when/if a disaster occurs and how the back-end of Wind actually works. The video is over 20 minutes in length and offers general overview of this highly secure Toronto facility (they have locations similar to this in all their launch cities).

  • Yesterday, Wind Mobile introduced a new data add-on for middle-range subscribers, but today they’re trying to rope in customers with some more direct incentives: 50% off their first six months of voice/data service (no add-ons) if they sign up before the end of May. Additionally, if you’re already a Wind Mobile subscriber, you can take advantage of a new referral program which will give you a whole free month of service for every friend you recruit, capping out at six referrals.
